JOHN STIEGELMEIER | FORMER SDSU FOOTBALL HEAD COACH
John Stiegelmeier retired as the winningest head coach in South Dakota State University football history after winning the 2022 FCS National Championship. Coach “Stig,” as he is known to anyone and everyone, a Selby, South Dakota native, returned to his alma mater in 1988 as secondary coach and recruiting coordinator. In 1990, he was named defensive coordinator before being elevated in 1996 to head coach.
The Jackrabbits never had a losing season in Missouri Valley Football Conference play in the fifteen seasons it has played in what has proven to be the toughest FCS conference in the country. Stig led the Jackrabbits to the FCS playoffs twelve times and finished his career with a one-hundred-ninety-nine and one-hundred-twelve record in twenty-six seasons. In 2022, Coach Stiegelmeier was named the recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award as the top coach in the FCS, the FCS Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association, the Bruce Craddock Missouri Valley Football Conference Coach of the Year, and was an AFCA FCS Regional Coach of the Year.
He recently accepted a position as a senior advisor for the SDSU Foundation. In his role, John focuses on relationship building and representing the university at different public events. In addition to the SDSU Foundation, Stiegelmeier works closely with the Office of the President, the SDSU Alumni Association and the SDSU Athletics Department. John and his wife Laurie have been generous supporters of organizations like Feeding South Dakota, and Stig serves on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes state board of directors.

Jason and his wife Hannah have six children: Margot, Eloise, James, Thomas, Frances, and Lily. They moved around a lot as his academic career has unfolded. They moved to Yankton in 2017. Since that time, Jason has served MMU as an assistant professor in the Theology and Philosophy department. Sometimes, the English department let’s Jason teach writing and literature courses. These are his first loves, so he is so grateful to get to cross disciplines. Jason loves teaching. It gives him a lot of life. Jason is grateful for his students, who continue to push him to be better and better. MMU has provided Jason with an ideal environment in which to become a better listener and a lifelong learner.
